Nyack Library Tech Help Program Procedure
The Nyack Library is committed to assisting patrons in navigating technology effectively to residents of the Nyack School District. Our Tech Help Program aims to empower patrons with the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize various digital resources. To ensure fair and efficient utilization of this service, the following procedure has been established.
Appointment System:
- Each patron is entitled to a maximum of four appointments per calendar year for technology assistance. Identification showing a current Valley Cottage or Nyack address must be shown upon application.
- Appointments must be scheduled in advance through the Library's online designated booking system or by contacting library staff directly by calling the reference desk at 845-358-3370 Ext. 214
- Patrons are expected to arrive punctually for their scheduled appointments.
- If a patron misses an appointment without prior notification, it will be deducted from the four appointments available
- Patrons are encouraged to provide at least 12 hours notice if they need to cancel or reschedule an appointment.
- Repeated cancellations may impact a patron's eligibility for future appointments.
- Each appointment slot is allocated a specific duration, typically ranging from 30 minutes to one hour, depending on the nature of the assistance required.
- Guidelines:
- -Please arrive with a clear goal of what you would like to learn.
- -Please arrive with all the necessary credentials needed to access your device or accounts.
- -Be sure to bring in any device you need help with along with any power cords and accessories.
- -You may only request one appointment at a time.
- -Library staff members are unable to troubleshoot hardware, repair devices, or install software and programs.
- -Library staff members are unable to assist with forms that include personal identifying information, including but not limited to job applications, tax forms, unemployment, social security, and bank information.
- -Library staff can help you navigate to these sites but are unable to and will not fill out forms on your behalf.
- -Library staff are not tax professionals, job coaches, or unemployment specialists, and are unable to advise you on these topics. For assistance with these topics, we refer you to Rockland Works. Rockland Works is located:

Scope of Assistance:
- The Technology Assistance Program covers a wide range of topics, including but not limited to:
- Basic computer skills
- Downloading library eBooks or audiobooks onto your computer or portable device
- Using Hoopla, Libby, or Kanopy
- Kindle, Kindle Fire, or Nook eReaders
- Searching the library catalog
- Using library databases
- Computer Basics
- Smartphone and Tablet Basics (including specific apps)
- Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint)
- Email (phone number required to create email account)
- Google Drive
- Zoom, Microsoft Teams, or Google Meets.
- Patrons seeking assistance with specialized or advanced topics may be referred to external resources or programs.
- Patrons are encouraged to provide feedback regarding their experience with the Technology Assistance Program by filling out the

The computer instruction is informal and based on the user’s needs, but the depth of instruction is dependent on the skills and available knowledge of the instructor.
One-on-one training sessions are limited to 60 minutes per session. There will be a maximum of four sessions per calendar year.
Learners can apply at the Reference Desk or using the online sign-up form and will be contacted by a librarian to arrange a mutually agreeable schedule.
