They rented the old Lyall Hotel for $25 a month and lived there until the little stone house they built on River Road was ready to move into in 1925. In that house they created the artwork for 91 books including their Caldecott Award winning The Big Snow. The Haders were dedicated to making children’s lives better, to preserving the beauty of the Hudson, to fostering conservation efforts and to forging incredible friendships. They lived a storybook life in a storybook house. Karen Tolley, director of Hader Connection and co-author of Berta and Elmer Hader: A Lifetime of Art, and Sybilla Cook, author of Drawn Together: A Biography of Berta and Elmer Hader (to be released in 2015), visited the Nyack Library in 2015. (See picture above that also features FONL members Betty & Win Perry and Mary Anne Evangelist.) To learn more about Berta and Elmer please visit www.haderconnection.com.
