Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information.
Did you know that in August 2021, the Leander Independent School District near Austin, Texas had removed, or threatened to remove, over a dozen titles from its secondary school book club reading list? Local community members claim the books are "inappropriate" for children. Many of these titles grapple with important issues related to race, gender, sexuality and violence.
