Our sister library, Valley Cottage, is also hosting Banned Book Week events. Check it out!

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted for removal or restrictions in libraries and schools. Banned Books Week highlights the value of free and open access to information.

Did you know that in August 2021, the Leander Independent School District near Austin, Texas had removed, or threatened to remove, over a dozen titles from its secondary school book club reading list? Local community members claim the books are "inappropriate" for children. Many of these titles grapple with important issues related to race, gender, sexuality and violence. Click here for Pen America's article about its campaign to fight for these students' right to read. Find out more reasons why books have been banned, challenged, or burned here and here.

Click here to check out ALA's Banned Books Week YouTube channel for informational videos and watch their author and celebrity Read Out videos here.
