The Marketplace

WHAT IS IT? The Marketplace approach arranges the adult nonfiction materials into broad subject areas, rather than in straight Dewey Decimal order from 000-999. These broad areas are:
• Countries (history, geography, travel)
• Home & Garden (cooking, gardening, home design and
renovation, crafts, pets)
• The Arts (visual arts, including architecture and photography)
• Science & Technology
• Literature
• Business & Society (social science, business, careers)
• Body, Mind, Spirit (health, diet, sports, philosophy, religion,
spiritualism)
• Performing Arts (music, dance, theatre)
WHY DID WE DO IT? Because our computer catalogs do such a good job of finding specific material for research and study, libraries are now finding that they can improve the library for the average member of the browsing
public. Our goal is to improve your library experience by placing books of similar interest in proximity to each other by tweaking the Dewey system. By doing this, we hope to make browsing both more enjoyable and more
efficient.
HOW CAN I FIND WHAT I’M LOOKING FOR?
When you are not looking for a specific title, you will be directed to the appropriate subject area of your general interest, for browsing among books and media. When you need a specific title or author you should begin with
our computer catalog. With the exception of new items, all of the adult nonfiction collections are found on the top floors of both the old Library and the new wing. A map of the Marketplace layout and associated Dewey
numbers is available at the various information desks at the Library. When you search for an item in the online catalog, you’ll need to look for two pieces of information, the collection and the call number. The “call number” will either be a string of numbers with three letters at the end (for example, 641.5636 MOS) or it will be a single word or name. The
“collection” might say Adult Fiction or Biography, or a Marketplace like Science & Technology. The collection is the key to where the item is in the Library; the call number is the key to where the item is within that collection.
BUT WHAT ABOUT DEWEY? Some users have expressed dismay at our “throwing away” the Dewey system. In fact, we have done no such thing! Within all of the Subject Collections, items are still kept in strict Dewey order. The Dewey number remains essential to locating an item in the Library.
COMMENTS? As Marketplace Manager, I welcome all of your comments and suggestions. I can be found most days up on the fourth floor in the Adult Services area. If you prefer to call or email, I can be reached at extension 213, or at bcash@nyacklibrary.org. I look forward to seeing you.
