 1. What is Kanopy?

Kanopy is an award-winning video streaming service that provides access to more than 30,000 independent and documentary films ─ titles of unique social and cultural value from The Criterion Collection, The Great Courses, Media Education Foundation, and thousands of independent filmmakers. With Kanopy there is no waiting list, you can borrow any title in the Nyack Library Kanopy collection by simply downloading the free Kanopy app available for the iPhone/iPad, Kindle Fire and many Android devices or by visiting the website at: https://nyacklibrary.kanopystreaming.com .


You must be a Nyack Library card holder in good standing (no fines over $10 and not expired) to use Kanopy.

2. How many titles can I watch?

You can watch a maximum of 4 videos per month. You will receive 4 play credits every month. Once you press play on a video, you will automatically use one (1) play credit. Once you press play on a video, you will have 3 days to view it as many times as you like without using another play credit. If you would like to watch the same video after the 3 days have passed, you will use up another play credit.

3. When will my play credits reset?

Play credits reset on the 1st of the month.  Once you have used your 4 credits, you will not be able to play any films until the new month starts when you will be given a fresh quota of 4 play credits again.

4. How can I keep track of my videos?

You can track your viewing activity by visiting My Dashboard > Recently Viewed. The Recently Viewed page will list every video you have ever watched, even after the 3-day period has ended. If a video is still within the 3-day viewing period, the list will include the amount of time left on that viewing period.

5. Can I create my own video lists?

You can save titles to watch at a later date by clicking on +My List. You can access the +MyList option by either hovering over the title, or clicking on the title, either way will work. Titles are then added to your Watchlist. You can see your saved titles by clicking on your username at the top of the page.
You can also create and share playlists of videos using the playlists feature.

6. What devices can you use to watch videos?

You can watch videos on a computer or mobile device using a web browser.

You will need an internet connection to watch videos on Kanopy. Films cannot be downloaded to a computer or device; they only stream through the internet.

7. Can you stream to your television?

Kanopy is compatible with the streaming services, Roku. Other alternatives to stream to your television include:
  • Apple TV
  • Chromecast using an Android/Google device
  • Connecting your computer to your television via HDMI

8. Can visually impaired users access the films?

Yes, Kanopy's website and video player are both fully compatible with all screen readers on desktop browsers, as well as with iOS and Android devices.

9. Who can use Kanopy?

10. How do I start using Kanopy?
  1. Download the Kanopy app to your mobile device or visit https://nyacklibrary.kanopystreaming.com/ in your browser.
  2. Click on "Don't have an account yet" and provide your email, name, and create a password. You'll have to confirm your account in your email.
  3. They'll then ask you for your library card number. it has to be a Nyack library card in good standing (no fines over $10 and not expired).

1. What is hoopla?

Hoopla is a digital media service available to Nyack Library cardholders that enables you to check out movies, videos, full music albums, and audiobooks. With hoopla there is no waiting list, you can borrow any title in the Nyack Library hoopla collection by simply downloading the free hoopla app available for the iPhone/iPad, Kindle Fire and many Android devices or by visiting the website at: http://www.hoopladigital.com . 

You must be a Nyack Library card holder in good standing (no fines over $10 and not expired) to use hoopla.

2. How many titles can I watch?

You can watch a maximum of 4 items per month. You will receive 4 play credits every month. Once you press play on a video, you will automatically use one (1) play credit. Once you press play the borrowing period varies depending on the type of item selected.

oopla's borrowing period is:
eBooks - 21 days
TV Shows - 3 days
Movies - 2 days
Music - 7 days
Comics - 21 days

 If you would like to watch the same video after the borrowing period has passed, you will use up another play credit.

3. When does the monthly borrow period end?

The monthly borrow limit resets on the first day of the new month. Previously borrowed titles will remain until their lending period expires, but you will be given your new month's borrows.

4. Are there any fees to use hoopla?

No, hoopla is a free service for all Nyack Library patrons. Unlike other free services, hoopla has no ads or commercials while viewing or listening to content.

5. Are titles downloaded onto my device or computer?

All titles are available for streaming and temporary downloads to a mobile device. Borrowed titles are only available for download on mobile devices, such as iOS (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch) and supported Android phones or tablets.

6. Can I keep a list of hoopla selections that I want to watch or listen to later?

Yes, hoopla has a “favorites” list that you can add items to. 

7. How often does hoopla get new content?
Typically, hoopla adds new content weekly, and they are constantly working with content providers to add content to hoopla's offerings.

8. How do I start using Hoopla?
  1. Download the Hoopla app to your mobile device or visit http://www.hoopladigital.com in your browser.
  2. Click on Sign Up.
  3. Select Nyack Library as your library.
  4. Enter your library card number and PIN - You must be a Nyack Library card holder in good standing (no fines over $10 and not expired).
  5. Enter your email address and choose a memorable password. You’ll need to remember these in order to use Hoopla on other devices you own such as laptops, tablets, and smartphones.

9. Where can I find the Hoopla app?

The hoopla digital mobile app can be found in the App Store on your iOS device, the Google Play store on your Android device, and the Amazon Appstore on your Kindle Fire HDX. Search for "hoopla digital" to find and download the app.

11. What devices are supported by hoopla?

The free hoopla app is available for the iPhone/iPad, Kindle Fire and many Android devices. See specifics below.
Apple:
Currently, Hoopla is supported by iOS devices that run the latest version of iOS. This includes: iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s/5c, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, iPad 2 and newer, iPad Air, iPad Mini, and iPod Touch 5th generation and newer. As od 4/4/2018, hoopla will no longer support Apple iOS9 devices (such as the iPad Mini and the iPhone 4s). While hoopla will continue to work on these Apple devices for the immediate future, they will not receive future app updates.
Android:
The hoopla mobile app is also available for Android smartphones and tablets. The hoopla digital app is compatible with select Android devices, including most devices that support Android OS 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above. This also includes the Nook HD and HD+ tablets.
Kindle:
The hoopla digital app is also now compatible with 7" and 8.9" Kindle Fire HDX tablets. You can download the app through the Amazon Appstore on your Kindle Fire HDX tablet.

Amazon & Chromecast:
hoopla supports  the Amazon FireTV 3rd Generation as well as the Chromecast Ultra device in addition to other Amazon devices, such as Echo, Dot, Spot, and Show. 

12. What browsers are supported by hoola?
All browsers (Chrome, Firefox) should work with hoopla except Internet Explorer.
